Do you want to learn Arabic but you don’t have the time or money to attend a formal class? Is it possible to learn Arabic by yourself without having anyone to practice with?
Most people take classes or hire an expensive private teacher to learn a new language. They think it is the only way to get results.
Well, they are wrong. Learning Arabic by yourself is possible, and if you want some prove, then, here I am. I have learned English myself. I’ve never attended a private school. I’ve never practiced with a native speaker, and yet I can speak English fluently and naturally.
So, if I can do it, so can you. There is only one condition: You have to do it the right way. In other words, you must follow effective methods to learn Arabic and have fun at the same time.
Don’t worry. I got your back. In this article, I will show you the most useful tips to speak Arabic fluently by yourself.
1. Study everyday
The more time you spend on studying, the faster your level improves. This rule is always true regardless of what method you use. However, I am not setting any conditions on the amount of time you need to spend per day. You can study for 2 hours, 1 hour, or even for 2 minutes. Obviously the more the better, but most importantly, you have to be CONSISTENT.
In other words, make sure to study Arabic EVERY DAY. Don’t miss one single day. It is totally okay to study five minutes a day as long as you ready to do it every day.
Learning Arabic takes time, so don’t rash your way out. Take it easy and slowly. Figure out how to implement the “learning Arabic time” into your daily schedule until it becomes an integrated habit.
2. Keep it simple
If you are a beginner, start with the basics. You need to take the same steps when learned your own language. So, it would be a good idea if you learn from the children’s materials. For example, children’s movies, books, and stories. In these materials, they use basic Arabic. It allows you to build a solid foundation which allows you to escalate to higher levels.
However, most of these materials are boring, and I don’t want you start your Arabic journey with something that kills your motivation. As a result, I recommend using stories and Anime to start with. Here is a list of them. Search on YouTube by writing down these phrases:
القناص, وان بيس, سبيس تون, قصص قصيرة، قصص للاطفال
Anyway, if you these materials bore the hell out of you, don’t use them. Do your home work until you find the ones that interest you. The main idea is that you pick a material that interest you, and at the same time, it uses basic, easy Arabic.
3. Keep it short
What do I mean by that? For example, using a movie you love as a material to learn Arabic is a great idea. But unfortunately, it is a long material. You will not learn much form it. So, what do you do instead?
You are going to divide it into SHORT parts. That’s why I said to keep it short. For example, you can divide the movie into one-minute or two-minutes parts, and this goes for any material you wish to use, whether it is a movie, a TV show, or a book.
4. Listen to Arabic
Thanks to the internet, you have an easy access to tons of Arabic materials like movies, videos, TV shows…etc. You can download whatever you like to use it to learn Arabic. However, before you start listening, you must know the meaning in your own language.
Once you get the meaning, just relax and listen to the Arabic material. The good thing about listening is that you can do it whenever and wherever you want. All you need is, your phone and a pair of headphones. You can listen to Arabic when you walk, take the bus, or even when you practice sport.
So, whenever you have free time, pick up your phone, and listen to Arabic!
5. Speak Arabic
Don’t practice until you get it right. Practice until you can’t get it wrong
If you are waiting for the perfect moment to start speaking Arabic, trust me it won’t come. If you are looking to spell the Arabic words correctly without any mistakes, you won’t.
I’ve had the same experience with English. Back when I was a child. I’ve always been nervous and shy when I tried to speak English. I was always telling myself: “Anouar, don’t speak any word until you are 100% sure that you spell it perfectly.” Unfortunately, I have made a huge mistake, because I was holding myself to speak English. As a result, I have waisted a lot time that could be spent on improving my speaking skills.
So, please don’t make the same mistake. Always speak Arabic no matter how funny you sound, because it is the only way for your tongue to get used to the language.
6. Write Arabic
Writing by hand has a big effect on memory, according to multiple studies. When you write down something using your hand, your brain connects the words to memory more quickly compared to reading only.
From a personal experience, writing English helped me remember the new vocabulary much faster compared to listening or reading. It may sound scary to you, especially if you have never written an Arabic word before, but trust me, it is not that big of a monster. Once you get used to it, it will be as easy as writing your own language.

7. Repetition
I have talked about this point in my previous article. It is probably the most important tip in this list. As for now, you already know what you should do: find an interesting, short, and basic material, listen, speak, and write it, but if you do it just one time, it is not going to be enough. You have to repeat doing all these things for at least one week to make sure that every word is engraved deep into your brain.
That’s why you need repetition. If you get enough repetition, you will never forget the new words you learned in your material. So, make sure to repeat listening, speaking, and writing using the same material for one week before you move to the next one.
